PLA

PLA is the most common filament used in FDM 3D printing due to it's low cost and ease of printing. PLA is made from fermentet plant starch and is used to make plastic film (for food packaging), bottles and in injection molding, in addition to 3D printing.

Pros and Cons

-Easy to print with.
-Low cost.
-Ideal for rapid prototyping, decorative pieces and functional items that won't be exposed to high temperatures or stress.

-Low melting point. Models can warp in warm envirnoments, such as on the dashboard of a hot car.
-Relatively soft and less durable than other materials.

PETG

PETG is also commonly used in 3D printing, usually as an alternative to PLA when higher durability or temperature resistance is required.

Pros and Cons

-Good heat resistance.
-Less flexible and more durable than PLA.
-Chemically resistant to many chemicals.

-Difficult to print with, resulting in more cosmetic imperfections and a higher cost
-The properties of PETG results in surfaces that don't look particularly good
-PETG is slippery and difficult to post-process (e.g. paint or sand)
